Service Line Inventory

About the Service Line Inventory for consumers of the Macungie Borough Water System
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is requiring all water utilities to create a Service Line Inventory(SLI) to determine where lead pipes exist in their systems, including the pipes on the customer side that connect to the public system. The Lead Service Line Inventory(SLI) is an inventory of every service line in the distribution system, including both the utility owned and customer owned service lines. Each must be categorized as either lead, non-lead, galvanized requiring replacement, or lead status unknown. We are required to make the SLI publicly available.

Having a lead service line does not automatically mean high levels of lead in your home’s tap water. Macungie Borough Authority tests for lead in tap water every three years at 10 representative taps of vulnerable homes in the Borough. We do this according to the requirement of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Lead and Copper Rule. The testing results are used to determine if our water continues to be non-corrosive so that the tap water has minimum potential for lead to leach from the plumbing materials. So far, our test results show that the non-corrosive properties of Macungie’s well water are minimal, keeping lead levels to a minimum.

As of this posting, you are not legally required to replace your side of the water service line from the (curbstop to the house or building) should it be classified as a Lead Line, Galvanized Requiring Replacement, or Unknown. But we want you to make an informed decision on replacement. What this does mean for us as the system owner, we must make a plan to replace the system side’s Lead Lines, and Galvanized Requiring Replacement lines, and identify the Unknown service lines. If you do decide to replace your water service line, please let us know well in advance so we may reconfirm your service line material and make arrangements to replace our side of the service line if need be. If your service line is copper or pex (a type of plastic) you do not have to replace it.

If you know the service line material listed in the SLI for a location is in conflict with what you have, please let us know so we may make the correction.

The following notices will be distributed on an annual basis to those that have water service lines classified as

  • Lead Line
  • Galvanized Requiring Replacement
  • Unknown

The notice contains information about:

  • What is a Service Line.
  • How Can I Determine My Service Line Material.
  • What are the Health Effects of Lead.
  • What Can I do to Reduce Exposure to Lead in Drinking Water
